Chichester golf veterans put losing start behind them
First, a strong team from Old Thorns became the first visiting team to win on the Cathedral course for more than two years, which they did handsomely with a 5-1 victory.
Though four matches went to the last green, there was no doubting a significant result for the visitors.

Hide AdAt Hill Barn the vets played the first leg of a home-and-away tussle for the Haygarth Trophy. Once again half the matches were close and decided on the final green but still the vets lost 6-2 in an event they have never lost in the ten years it has been played.
There is a significant challenge now for the vets to retain the trophy in the return fixture in July.
The vets’ captain and vice-captain returned for the inaugural match of a new fixture against Goodwood played on the Cathedral course.
Vice-captain Jim Robertson donated a trophy to be played for over the home and away matches and he was delighted to see the Chichester team respond to his encouragement with a 4½-1½ victory. The margin of victory will be sorely tested in the return match at Goodwood.
