The 32-year-old’s display was a heartening sight in the continued absence of Paul Jones (thigh), Ryan Fulton (thigh) and Alex Bass (knee).

Smith made 16 appearances in a Fratton Park loan spell before its expiry after Saturday’s game.

He said: ‘He was very good on Saturday, we know how good Murph is and those saves could have changed the game. They were massive.
‘He was injured when I first arrived at the club, but I have trained with him a bit and done some shooting against him so know how frustrating it can be for strikers trying to score past him.
‘You look at his career and the levels he has played – and on Saturday he showed the quality he possesses in those two saves.

‘Murphy has experience and I’m certain will be alright for Portsmouth in the play-offs.’
