Rye Harbour Master Carl Bagwell has issued a warning to mariners as work gets underway on a new jetty.
The work involves the removal of the visitors staging on the east side of the river adjacent the harbour office and the construction of a new, larger reception jetty some 70 metres in length.

All works will be completed by cranes positioned in th
e harbour office car park.

The final fitting out of the jetty will be completed from scaffold staging that will extend into the river.

Demolition and re-construction work is expected to commence on or about December 1 and be completed by the end of February 2009.

Construction will take place when tidal conditions permit and may involve night work.

Mr Bagwell said: "The site will be lit at night with any extending staging marked with orange flashing lights.

"No vessels will be permitted to load. discharge or moor to any part of the structure whilst work is in progress.

"All craft must proceed through this area of operation with caution keeping at least five metres away from the jetty and at slow speed so as not to endanger works and site contractors.

Further details and updates can be obtained from the Harbour Office. Tel:- 01797 225225 Fax:- 01797 227429 email: rye.harbour@environment-agency.gov.uk.
