Student champions hospice with '˜wear it blue' fundraiser
Katie Roff, a Year 10 student from Ormiston Six Villages Academy, has raised hundreds of pounds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice after implementing a fundraising initiative for the entire school. In July, Katie put forward an idea for a ‘wear it Blue’ non-uniform day which was enthusiastically taken up by the academy. Through her initiative, students, their families and staff succeeded in raising £500 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice who helped her family through a difficult time.
Katie was able to see her good work come to fruition when Ali Archer, volunteer hospice ambassador champion at St Wilfrid’s Hospice, recently visited Ormiston Six Villages to receive a cheque for £500 which was raised by the academy. Mrs Archer addressed students in a whole school assembly, speaking about the work of the hospice and putting in perspective for students just how much it costs to run each day - £20,000, explaining that this is more than double the amount of a one-year student loan.

Her own family have experienced the compassion and support from the caring staff at the hospice, and it is also a charity close to the Academy’s heart; caring for a former colleague, Di Miller.”
Ms Umbar Sharif, principal at Ormiston Six Villages Academy, said: “We are all very proud of how Katie has championed awareness of this worthy charity throughout the Academy.
“Katie was recognised as Student of the Week this week for her leadership initiative and for helping to remind our community of the importance of hospices.”
