Transition Town Lewes will be officially launched by Mayor Merlin Milner at a public meeting at Lewes Town Hall on April 24. It will be the prelude to a programme of events and projects dealing with local issues such as food, energy, transport, quality of life in Lewes and 'whatever anyone wants to bring with them'. A spokesman said: 'This is a town-wide response to the challenges facing us that will draw on the multiple skills, creativity and knowledge of the Lewes community, creating a pathway leading to a low-fossil-fuel, resilient, vibrant future for our town. 'We believe that by starting now, we can together create a future that will strengthen the local economy, build on our existing social and economic capital and increase the community's self-reliance in changing times.' One of the organisers, writer and former Lewes New School manager Adrienne Campbell said: 'This is a response to climate change and the end of cheap oil. 'It's important to realise that real change happens at a personal and community level. 'We have the power to make a difference.'
